Venables speaks at Asia Pacific Convention in China
Activities included the opening of the 2009 ICE Asia Pacific Convention, visiting the Olympic Park in Beijing, checking out the transport in Shanghai and even taking in the Wetlands in Hong Kong’s famous Mai Po Nature Reserve.
Venables delivered the keynote address: Conserving Our Heritage – Driving Our Development, at the international convention. Taking place this year in Hong Kong, which has over 4,000 ICE members, the convention included a number of speeches and discussions focusing on civil engineering issues and future strategy.
Venables said: "The Institution’s presence in China is expanding at an exciting rate. I have learnt a great deal about the intricacies of the construction and engineering sector across the country through meeting with our members and industry leaders."
Keen to see for herself the pace and scale of development across China, Venables carried out site visits to Beijing’s Olympic Park, Shanghai’s Hongqiao transportation hub and the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Corridor.
The importance of conservation and the protection of heritage was also highlighted during a visit to Hong Kong’s Mai Po Nature Reserve, a designated Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention (1971).
