This week we bring together a selection of five geotechnical projects linked by their applications to transport.
Just off the A3, Alexandra Wynne visits a tunnelling site at the Devil's Punch Bowl near Hindhead.
Further north in Scotland, Damon Schünmann looks at an upgrade of the A77, north of Cairnryan.
At the classic Victorian seaside resort of Scarborough, David Hayward saw a deep road cutting through fractured rock.
A high speed line is under construction between the Italian cities of Bologna and Milan, and Alexandra Wynne saw the unusual gabion and geogrid supports for the track.
Finally, back to Scotland for a look at the ground investigations for a new rail link to Glasgow Airport.
