Sustainability postgraduate courses win research cash
Aimed at boosting skills in science and engineering disciplines, the government cash awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) will create 44 training centres and generate more than 2,000 PhD student places.
Announcing the initiative, science and innovation minister Lord Drayson said: “Britain faces many challenges in the 21st century and needs scientists and engineers with the right skills to find answers to these challenges, build a strong economy and keep us globally competitive. EPSRC’s doctoral training centres will provide a new wave of engineers and scientists to do the job.”
These will be 17 industrial training centres and the initiative has already received support from businesses.
Arup is a partner of one centre at the University of Reading. It will work on zero-carbon housing. Arup global director of research professor Jeremy Watson said: “Businesses like Arup need a good supply of highly-qualified scientists with the right skills to further innovation in the design of sustainable towns, cities and the wider environment.”
