Record entry for NCE Graduate Awards

These are now being marked by a panel of judges from the scheme’s top company sponsors and a shortlist of six finalists will be chosen by the end of this month.

Graduates working in countries as distant as India, Dubai and Kazakhstan have contributed to the record response - up 40% on last year’s total.

"This is a phenomenal response and reinforces the high reputation of these awards among both graduates and the wider construction industry," said awards secretary David Hayward.

"They are now making a considerable contribution to the increasing quality and influence of the civil engineering profession’s future leaders."

Consultants, contractors and specialist suppliers all made considerable efforts this year to encourage their eligible young civil engineers to enter. One major consultant offered an "inducement" of an extra day’s holiday, and an all expenses paid night out in London, for the best entry submitted by its own graduates.

The competition was open to graduates who gained a civil engineering - or equivalent - degree last year. Entrants had to highlight their achievements at university and during their first post graduate jobs, with as much emphasis placed on enthusiasm and engineering ability as academic qualifications.

The shortlist of six will be interviewed by the judges at the Institution of Civil Engineers early next month and winners share in a prize fund totalling over £2700 at an awards lunch in the Institution's Great Hall in December.

Entrants who have not been contacted by Friday 27 October have regrettably not been shortlisted.
