Tideway planning timescale revealed
Thames Water has said that it will submit detailed plans for its 32km, £1.6bn “super sewer” Tideway project to the Planning Inspectorate on 28 February.
After submission of the 50,000 page development consent application for the sewer that is part of Thames Water’s plan to stop untreated sewage discharging into the river Thames, the inspectorate will have 28 days to decide if the application is valid. If accepted, the inspectorate could start examination of the application in September with a decision possible by autumn 2014, clearing the way for work on start to start in 2015 and completed by 2023.
Although planning consent for the scheme is still some way off from being confirmed, Thames Water head of Thames Tideway Phil Stride has said that a number of major contractors are in the process of forming joint ventures to bid for the three contracts to build the “super sewer”.
Stride confirmed to NCE that joint ventures of Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and Bam Nuttall; Laing O’Rourke and Ferrovial; and Costain, Vinci and Bachy Soletanche are expected to bid for the work in the prequalification stages. Hochtief, Murphy and Dragados are believed to be another team in the running, while Skanska and Bilfinger are also working in partnership. Stride also said that Italian firms Impregilo and Salini have also expressed an interest in the work.
The work will be split into three contracts with the eastern and western single bore drives valued at £500M and £300M, respectively, while the central double drive is valued at £800M.
