Engineers going for gold

Two British engineers will be heading to the Beijing Games with more than the triumphant steelwork of the main stadium on their minds, as they take their places in the British Olympic fencing squad.

Construction Industry Council chief executive Graham Watts has had a lifelong involvement in fencing and his competitive career culminated with a Commonwealth Medal in 1990. He is currently the manager and performance director of the British Olympic Fencing Team.

Buro Happold infrastructure engineer Richard Kruse is three-times British champion in men's foil and was a quarter-finalist at the Athens Olympics. Commentators have dubbed him Britain's best hope for a fencing medal and has overcome an injury to take his place in the Olympics team.

The fencing will take place in the Fencing Hall at the National Convention Centre, a temporary venue.
