Probe launched on viaduct collapse
A viaduct on one of the busiest routes in Ireland has collapsed, sparking calls for urgent tests on railways bridges across the country.
A 20m section of rail line on the main Dublin to Belfast route has given way across Broadmeadow estuary, North of Malahide Station on Friday the 21st of August.
A train driver managed to avert a serious accident following the rush hour incident, Irish Rail revealed.
Serious disruption is expected on the cross-border line, which will be closed for several weeks while an investigation takes place.
“This viaduct carries some of the busiest commuter trains in Ireland, it is nothing short of a miracle that the collapse did not result in a serious accident and loss of life,” said passenger organisation Rail Users representative Ireland Mark Gleeson
“While we await the report from the Rail Accident Investigation Unit, it is essential that all bridges are inspected nationwide to ensure no critical faults have been overlooked. At this moment, it is extremely important not to be complacent.”
