8pm: Contractors working for London Underground have brought the Victoria Line to a standstill

Contractors have brought the entire line to a halt after flooding a signal control room at Victoria Station with concrete.

Bam Nuttall / Taylor Woodrow is carrying out a hugely complex £700M upgrade of the station.

Said London Underground’s twitter travel alert: “A leak occurred as our contractors were working next to the signal control room. Our engineers are working hard to fix this.”

Website Us Vs Th3m reported that about three rows of relay equipment were submerged in the concrete and published a number of pictures.

8am: A new study confirming a link between atmospheric pollution and heart attack risk strengthens the European Union’s case for tougher clean air targets, according to experts.

Research published in the BMJ looking at long-term data for 100,000 people in five European countries found evidence of harm, even at permitted concentrations.

Repeated, long-term exposure to air pollution – living next to a busy road in a city, for example – takes its toll, says the research.

“Our study suggests an association between long term exposure to inhalable particulate matter and incidence of coronary events. These associations remained for exposure concentrations below the current European limits. The results of this study, together with other findings, support lowering of European limits for particulate air pollution to adequately protect public health,” says the study.
