RedR launches appeal to help 300,000 displaced in Sri Lanka

Disaster relief traing charity RedR is expecting a surge in demand following recent fighting between Tamil Tiger rebels and the Sri Lankan government, and has launched an appeal to help deal with the threat.

RedR has opened a new appeal to source funds to help deal with some 300,000 people displaced in recent fighting.

A gift of £50 could help an aid worker in Sri Lanka solve an engineering problem by funding a RedR Technical Support request.

RedR has been targeting local organisations to help deal with mass displacement.

RedR’s Chief Executive Martin McCann said: “Our main focus in Sri Lanka is building the capacity of local organisations so they can respond effectively to the current humanitarian crisis and help with recovery and reconstruction.”

Aid workers cannot operate effectively without funds and training to back-up their work. RedR provides training in technical skills such as water and sanitation engineering, how to manage a disaster response effectively and planning and constructing shelters.

The charity, which also places professionals to humanitarian programmes worldwide, has also been in touch with experienced aid workers, asking them to be on standby to respond to requests for assistance in Sri Lanka.  Currently 98 RedR Members are ready to respond to calls for specialist help.

While the demand for RedR’s services is likely to increase, the funding which it receives for its training programme in Sri Lanka is set to finish this year. RedR is therefore calling on all its supporters to help ensure that it can respond to the needs.
