Work set to start on cracked cliff
A cracked cliff which could cause a landslide and block the only road in an Aberdeenshire village is to soon be made safe by engineers.
Experts were called in to assess the Pennan rock face, which featured in the 1983 film Local Hero with Burt Lancaster, after a 25-metre crack appeared.
Contractors will begin pinning mesh across the area using around 100 special 10 metre long soil nails.
The rock face sits on the left of the route leading into the village which was temporarily closed to everyone except residents. Heavy rain led to fears a landslip could occur.
Aberdeenshire Council said no excavation would be necessary and the road would remain partially open. The work is expected to be completed before Christmas.
Director of transportation and infrastructure Iain Gabriel said: “This approach means that disruption to road access will be kept to a minimum, and that we should be finished before Christmas, weather permitting. We would like to once again extend our thanks to the residents of Pennan for the patience while these plans have been developed.”
Pennan was previously hit by a major mudslide in 2007 when some residents were evacuated and local homes were damaged.
