Two more Crossrail TBMs bound for London

Crossrail has said that the project’s sixth and seventh tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have completed factory testing at Herrenknecht’s facility in Germany and are soon to start the journey to London.

The sixth TBM – Mary – is a slurry machine that will drive the second tunnel below the Thames from Plumstead to North Woolwich, while the seventh machine is an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM which will be launched this summer on the drive from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green. The machines are expected on site in the next month.

According to Crossrail programme director Andy Mitchell, more than 4km of tunnels have now been constructed by the five TBMs already working on the project. The final TBM – another EPB machines – is expected to complete factory testing this summer.
