Tough competition for GE Awards shortlisting

Several of the judges on the panel, which includes Buro Happold’s Jim Cook, Campbell Reith’s Liz Brown, the BGA’s Rab Fernie and City University’s Sarah Stallebrass for the first time, said that making selection for the shortlist very challenging because of the calibre of the entries.

Despite many Crossrail and major London Underground projects not being completed in time for the award submission date, the entries demonstrate that there were still a high number of innovative geotechnical projects underway in 2012.

Several of last year’s winners have sponsored categories with Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering lending its name to the Contractor of the Year category, in which Bachy Soletanche, Bam Ritchies, Cementation Skanska, Costain, Hydrock, Keller and Van Elle have been shortlisted. Atkins, Buro Happold, Hyder and Lambeth Associates have all been shortlisted in the Consulting Firm of the Year, sponsored Bam Ritchies.

The 2012 winner of Ground Investigation Specialist of the Year, RSK, and subsidiary Structural Soils, is sponsoring the Sustainability Award in which Amey and Electrokinetic, Campbel Reith, Cementation and Ramboll with Bam Nuttall have been shortlisted.

In the International Project section, sponsored by Midas, Atkins, Goba, Mott MacDonald and Theiss John Holland have been shortlisted. Bauer Technologies, Groundforce, RSK and United Utilities have made the final four in the Select Plant Hire sponsored Health and Safety category.
