Foundations laid for former MG factory
Piling is progressing at the Bournville College site, located at the the former MG Rover factory, Longbridge.
Simplex Foundations is installing foundation piling for the project, to build a five storey education facility, spread over numerous interlinked buildings.
Two CFA rigs on site are installing 600 piles of diameters ranging from 300mm to 600mm, working through the most severe winter weather conditions which have been encountered in the past 30 years.
Geological analysis prior to commencement of works revealed a near surface geotechnical fault which called for extensive site probing to corroborate its exact location and design appraisals to counter its effect. Simplex also deployed a senior geotechnical engineer on site specifically to monitor drilling records and excavated material samples during piling trials.
The piling platform was constructed by Shepherd Construction using lime stabilisation to counter the excessive surface water on site.
The project developer and client is St. Modwen Developments. The Main Contractor is Shepherd Construction. The total project value is in the region of £66M. Simplex’s contract value is approximately £200,000. The College will welcome its first students in September 2011. Project is due for completion in June 2011.
