Crossrail cores to be stored in Cheshire salt mine

More than 20km of cores drilled in the course of site investigations for Crossrail have been safeguarded for future use by putting them back underground.

Crossrail has signed a long term agreement to store the cores at DeepStore in Cheshire, which is an exhausted part of Salt Union’s rock salt mine in Cheshire.

According to Crossrail, the storage facility 150m below ground is the ideal location for the 561 pallets because it has a consistent temperature and humidity levels.

The cores stored in Cheshire are less than half of the 50km of cores drilled during the site investigation phases of Crossrail.
