Bauer starts foundation work on Sydney regeneration scheme

Redevelopment of a former container port next to Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia has got underway with work on installing foundations for a new mixed use development at the site.

Bauer is working on constructing over 1000, 2.5m diameter bored piles to 35m below ground level for main contractor Lend Lease, who will develop the 22ha site with three major office towers and several smaller residential and office complexes are to be built, linked together with a common three-level basement. A hotel, shops, cafes and restaurants, cultural venues and public spaces are planned.

According to Bauer, the main challenge on the project is to deal with man-made sub-ground obstructions like old timber piles, steel members, concrete structures and contaminated soil before reaching the natural clay, which overlies sands and gravels with strengths of up to 50MPa.

Piling work is expected to be completed in June this year.
