Scotland builds biogas plant

A £22.5M biogas plant that will produce 5MW of electricity a year - enough to power 2,500 homes - is to be built on the new M74 Eco-Park in south Lanarkshire.

The Proactive Energy facility is Scotland’s first “green” commercial and industrial park, and will convert materials such as animal manure and sewage sludge into biogas.

This is then burned burned to produce electricity and heat or used as a vehicle fuel. The facility is expected to be operating in 2011.

The process works by enabling bacteria in a digester to break down the organic material into sugars and then into acids, which are decomposed to produce the gas.

Says Proactive director Ron Coakley: “By-products of our process becomes a high quality natural fertiliser that can be used on local farms.

“Thermal energy, another by-product, can be used to heat the premises of neighbouring Eco-Park occupiers as well as being used by cold stores and companies that require extreme heat in their manufacturing processes.”

South Lanarkshire Council spokesman Graham Scott said: “The development also meets our local plan objectives of promoting more sustainable communities and encouraging economic regeneration within the wider rural area.”
