Civil engineers' pay soars by up to 20% in past two years

Graduate civil engineers have seen average pay climb by 20% over the last two years to a whopping £34,535 according to the ICE's latest salary survey released this week.

The report also showed that civil engineers' salaries have outstripped inflation over the last two years with the average total income jumping 12% to £48,180.

'Industry is reporting a shortage of skills and these [pay rises] are aligning with that shortage' said ICE communications and marketing director Anne Moir. 'There are more graduate members for ICE and more people applying to sit their professional review.'

The survey, which looks at salaries paid to a range of 4,972 civil engineers said that the other big winners were company bosses who saw their average basic salary climb 19% to £79,798.

London is still the highest paid region with the average basic salary coming in at £53,780. Wales is the poorest paying region with an average basic salary of just £36,768.
