Mabey shakes up divisions
New setup is intended to be more than the sum of its parts, says Mabey chief operating officer.
Mabey Group is merging its Mabey Hire, Murrayplant and Mabey Support Systems (MSS) divisions to form Mabey Hire Services.
MSS is a specialist supplier and contractor with its own range of modular temporary support equipment. This includes falsework, shoring and jacking equipment, bridges and barrier systems.
Mabey Hire and Murrayplant specialise in non-mechanical plant hire.
The new company will be based at Mabey Hire’s former head office in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. David Murray, formerly managing director of Murrayplant, will be its chairman, Steve Smith, previously financial director at Mabey Hire, becomes chief executive officer, and Mabey Hire’s former operations director Mark Rooney becomes chief operating officer.
“All three companies have overlapping markets and complementary capabilities and this root-and branch reorganisation is designed to optimise their overall effectiveness,” said Rooney.
He added that the merger is not a cost cutting exercise but is intended to create a new business that “is greater than the sum of its parts.”
“This is very much a strategic move designed to make more efficient use of resources, offer a better local service and build on the strength of each of the existing companies,” he said.
The merger will result in a few job losses - mainly at senior management level, but there is no plan to relocate existing staff, although machinery and equipment is likely to be redistributed to make it more accessible to
customers.
