It’s life, but it’s also a construction material

Scientists are developing protocells − non living things that have life-like properties − for use as sustainable building materials that can adapt to their environment. Protocells are simple chemical models of biological cells known as primordial atomic globules. They can react to temperature, light and pH and can move.

The University of Southern Denmark is now working with the Bartlett School of Architecture to provide real-life applications for them. Researchers from the Bartlett’s Advanced Virtual and Technological Architecture Research (Avatar) group believe that the research will provide a natural and sustainable building material with the capability to react to the environment.
