May Gurney extend Network Rail structures contract

Network Rail has extended and expanded May Gurney’s contract to replace, restore and maintain the UK’s rail network structures in London and North East region until 2012.

The company estimates that the contract extension will generate an annual £20-25M of work plus possible additional enhancement works.

Work will include maintenance and renewal projects, including the reconstruction and refurbishment of bridges, along with embankment stabilisation and viaduct repairs.

Managing director of Rail at May Gurney, John Wilkinson, said the new contract reflected an: “Excellent engineering, an integrated service delivery and efficiency.

“We’re delighted to maintain this strong relationship with Network Rail, and we’re especially pleased with the extended geographical coverage, which is testament to the high quality work we’ve already delivered for our client. It’s also a credit to our team working in and around the UK’s rail network; ensuring commuters can travel with minimum disruption,” he said.

The existing contract was due to expire on 31st March 2010 but has been extended for an additional two years to 31st March 2012, the maximum available under the contract terms. The scope of the contract has also been extended to include East Anglia with May Gurney taking over from the current incumbent in that area in April 2010.

May Gurney is currently managing a £24M project for Network Rail to remove and replace the roof at London’s iconic Victoria Station, while keeping the station open to 350,000 pedestrians per day.

Work to strengthen and refurbish the High Level Bridge in Newcastle last year also saw May Gurney scoop four national awards.  And in March, the company delivered the first ever overnight bridge replacement for Network Rail in Gateshead - without a single train being affected or the need for any replacement buses.
