Bauer wins US dam remediation contract
Bauer Foundations has won a $106M (£68.6M) contract to install 29,000m2 of underground cut-off walls and pressure grouting of the Center Hill Dam in Tennessee, USA.
Bauer will undertake the two year project for the US Army Corps of Engineering, which identified the structure as being at a high risk of failure in 2007 due to seepage below the foundations.
The 79m high dam was built in 1948 to provide flood control on the Caney Fork and Falling Water River, as well as generate hydroelectricity. The main dam is formed from a concrete-faced earth embankment with earth embankment saddle dams on either side built on a foundation of limestone.
Deterioration of clay-filled joints within the limestone bed rock have been identified as the main cause of seepage. The new cut-off walls are designed to stop this seepage.
