Capita posts double-digit growth despite downturn

Capita Group, parent company of consultant Capita Symonds has posted strong half-year results on the back of strong public sector growth.

To 31 December 2008, turnover increased by 18% to £2,441M with underlying operating profit rising by 18% to £320.9M.

Consultancy arm Capita Symonds mirrored the group’s results, with turnover increasing by 16% to £284.2M.

Managing director of Capita Symonds Jonathan Goring said: “2008 was an exceptional year for Capita Symonds as we further consolidated our position thanks to another consecutive year of growth – our fifth since the company was formed in 2004. In the current economic climate this is an exceptional feat, which bears testimony to the underlying strength of our business.

“Thanks to our groundbreaking strategic partnerships with Local Authorities across the UK and a strong pipeline of new opportunities, we are also well placed to continue this sustained year-on-year growth. We offer a more diverse range of services and projects than any other UK consultancy, and our successful people, projects and performance are continuing to make a real difference across the country,” he said.

Key deals include:

  • a £75M, 15 year joint venture deal with Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Councils to deliver major highways, transportation, engineering, construction, environmental and related projects across the local authorities and the rest of South Wales.

  • a £70M contract with Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council for a ten year strategic partnership to deliver a wide range of property and highway services.

  • Securing Crossrail design framework place for tunnels, portals and central stations

  • Two major frameworks for the Learning and Skills Council

In 2008 Capita acquired land planning consultancy Lovejoy, structural engineering consultancy NRM Bobrowski and building services engineering consultancy Pearce Buckle.
