Birse scoops £147M A11 Fiveways to Thetford improvement scheme

The Highways Agency has awarded the £147M A11 Fiveways to Thetford Improvement scheme to Birse Civils.

The scheme will see the improvement of a 14.8 km section of the A11 between Fiveways Roundabout at Barton Mills near Mildenhall and the roundabout at the southern end of the Thetford Bypass, immediately to the south of Thetford.

The scheme is likely to consist of 6km of new dual carriageway, 9km of widened carriageway and will see approximately 1.5km of carriageway removed.

Structures include a new cut off channel bridge - approximately 25m long and 13m wide, a B1112 underbridge - approximately 26m long and 9m wide, two accommodation bridgea - approximately 60m and 75m long, and a B1106 overbridge - approximately 70m long and 15.5m wide.

The final value of the contract is a range between £106M and £147M.
