Scots hire Drinking Water Safety team

Scottish Water has appointed Mott MacDonald, MWH and Halcrow to produce Drinking Water Safety Plans (DWSPs) covering the entire population of Scotland.

The plans -- for 290 public water supplies -- are intended to identify potential source hazards at all points on the supply chain and implement control measures to minimise the risk of contamination.

Key activities for the DWSP teams will include data collection and analysis, site visits, risk workshops.

A system of routine monitoring of the control measures and a plan of remedial action when a control measure is not within the target will also be developed as part of the plan.

Mott MacDonald project manager David Smith said: "The DWSPs programme will be critical in identifying potential quality and quantity risks for Scottish Water."

Scottish Water expects to have all plans completed by 2012.
