Basic: The £104M basic alternative wear crossing

Sunderland City Council unveiled its alternative to the iconic £133M Wear Crossing this week, a £104M basic beam design.

This week the council launched a public consultation into whether the extra £21M needed to build an "iconic bridge" would be worthwhile (News last week).

Despite revealing a cheaper alternative, the iconic design by architect Stephen Spence and consultants Techniker, which won the design
competition in 2005, looks to be the popular among local residents.
