Skanska wins MOD contract

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has named Skanska preferred bidder for the design and construction of a new £120M facility at RAF Wyton.
The Cambridgeshire airbase contract will support part of the Defence Intelligence Modernisation Programme. The scheme will be carried out under Defence Estate's (DE) prime contracting initiative. Formal award of the scheme is expected to be announced at the end of this year with work likely to begin in early 2009 and completion set for 2011.
Under the contract, Skanska, will be the prime contractor and will have single point responsibility for managing its supply chain, including project consultants, throughout the project.
Other key members of Skanska's supply chain include the architectural practice Scott Brownrigg, M&E and structural engineer WSP and security consultant MFD.
Executive Vice President of Skanska UK David Tydeman, said: "In recent years we have successfully completed the redevelopment of the Ministry of Defence's Main Building in Whitehall as well as the development of new Army facilities at Rock Barracks in Woodbridge, Suffolk for the MOD and Defence Estates and we look forward to continuing our successful working relationship with them at RAF Wyton."
DE projects director Phil Gibb said that "This appointment marks a very important stage in the Defence Intelligence Modernisation Programme and we look forward to working with Skanska to achieve its success."
