Pell Frischmann have won "Best Project Collaboration" at the 2008 BEX (Building Exchange) Awards, for their work on 'The Cut' in south London.
The winning job was a £3M refurbishment of the pedestrian route from Southwark to Waterloo stations, forming the border between Lambeth and Southwark boroughs, carried out by consultants Pell Frischmann, in collaboration with for the Cross River Partnership and Lambeth Council.
"The Cut is a shining example of diverse sections of the community and local government working together to improve an area in central London for the benefit of local residents, business owners, and the wider community," said Helen Smith of the Cross River Partnership.
Pells suggested a 'non-standard' highway sandwich, comprising a geomembrane layer between the existing concrete base and the surfacing material. This gave increased durability for minimal construction depth and allowed the Lambeth Council to meet its goals for quality, durability and reduced budget.
For the lighting, significantly more energy efficient lighting was installed. Construction debris from the site has been fully recycled for new road jobs, all new parking meters are solar powered and 38 new cycle racks have been installed to encourage cycling.
"We're delighted with the way the project has worked out," Director at Pell Frischmann director Peter Miller said. "And it's a great example of what can be achieved by genuine collaboration. We all knew what we were striving for and just set that as our goal."
