The final piece of a 160m span highway bridge over the River South Tyne in Northumberland has been lifted in to place, marking a major milestone in the Haydon Bridge bypass project.
The final piece of the multi-span viaduct, which crosses both the River South Tyne and the Newcastle-Carlisle railway, was lifted in to place by contractor CVC Highway Solutions using a 600 tonne crawler crane.
Construction of the viaduct for the single carriageway bypass started in June 2007. It has four spans each weighing approximately 200 tonnes and sits on three central bridge piers two of which were constructed in the River South Tyne.
The £30 million 1.8 mile bypass of the A69 around the small town in Northumberland was commissioned by the Highways Agency and has involved the construction of a further three bridges for the new road. 12,000 vehicles a day are expected to use it when it opens in Spring 2009.
CVC Highway Solutions, the main contractor on the by-pass, is a joint venture between Volker Stevin and Hanson Contracting and design partner Capita Simmons.
