June reopening for Clyde Arc bridge

The Clyde Arc is expected to reopen to traffic on 29 June, Glasgow City Council confirmed yesterday.

The bridge has been closed since January, following a failure in a connection component. Since then, main contractor Edmund Nuttall Ltd and their team have been working to carry out successful repairs. With that work now almost complete, the Council expects to be able to reopen the bridge to all users later this month.

"It's just a hanger and a fewlicks of paint away," said a council spokesman today.

The Clyde Arc was closed late on January 14 following the failure of one of the steel fork connectors that tie the hangers to the bridge arch. Shortly afterwards the same component on another hanger was found to be damaged.  As a result the Council and Nuttall took an early decision to replace all 28 fork connectors with new product manufactured using milled steel and load tested off site before erection.

Glasgow City Council's Executive Director for Land and Environmental Services, Robert Booth, said: "The bridge will open safely within the predicted timescale and, as we promised at the time of the closure, at no cost to city council taxpayers.

"I must thank Nuttall for their unstinting commitment to the investigation and subsequent repairs.

"Together, we have taken every possible precaution to ensure that the people of Glasgow can have confidence in their bridge – and I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while this work was carried out."
