New railway bridge installed across A1
The full assembled bridge, weighing approximately 1,000 tonnes and measuring 30m long, was put into position during a three day closure of the track over Christmas.
Work started at midnight on Christmas Day, following the last train on Christmas Eve, and involved continuous working through to 5.30am on Sunday, 28 December when the line was re-opened with the new bridge in place.
The bridge is between Upton and Hemsworth where the new road crosses the Burton Salmon line.
Work on the link road is due to be complete later in 2009.
Installation of the bridge was a critical part of the Department for Transport funded project, and needed a minimum of two years notice for approval to close the track. Very detailed planning, jointly by Wakefield Council, Carillion and Network Rail, ensured that the work was completed successfully on time.
