New Eurocode guidance published

Key Eurocodes guidance on the geotechnical aspects of bridge design was issued for comment by the British Standards Institution (BSI) last week.

The Published Document, PD 6694-1: Recommendations for the design of structures subjected to traffic loading to BE EN 1997-1 includes recommendations on the design of retaining structures,
foundations, integral bridges and buried structures. It also provides guidance on matters currently included in Highways Agency standards.

Published Documents (PD) include complementary information which will accompany Eurocodes and their National Annexes. The information is sourced from current national codes, which will be withdrawn, and other guidance.

"PD6694-1 will be a key document for structural and geotechnical engineers engaged in the design of bridges," said Parsons Brinckerhoff director of bridge and structural engineering
and a principal author of the PD, Steve Denton.

"It covers issues not specifically dealt with in the Eurocodes, providing information needed by designers. Because of the importance of PD 6694-1, the responsible BSI committee has
provided the opportunity for public comment."

The public consultation process was launched at a meeting at the ICE last week. Comments can be made until 30 November through the BSI website http://drafts.bsigroup.com.

- The final online Eurocode consultation workshop run by the Steel Construction Institute
is on 30 October.
