NCE Graduate Awards finalists receive prize money boost
Shortlisted candidates for this year’s NCE Graduate Awards received a last minute bonus of a 50% increase in the prize money, as the winner was announced last December.
The “exceptional” quality of the 2008 finalists has prompted judges to increase the reward for all six shortlisted candidates.
Overall winner, 23 year old Emma Kent from Nottingham University and now a graduate structural engineer with Buro Happold, received a cheque for £1,500 at last Friday’s awards lunch at the ICE, London.
Runners up Chris Lonergan from Arup and Oliver Broadbent from Expedition Engineering both won £750; and highly commended Kate Cooksey from Morgan Est, Anna Lea from Mott Macdonald and Arup graduate engineer Hugh Pidduck each received £400.
“The judges found it very difficult to choose between the six finalists as they are all extremely talented” said award’s secretary David Hayward. “They all deserved to win so we thought it appropriate to recognise such outstanding quality by raising the rewards. But we only told them minutes before handing out the awards.”
The six winners, who all graduated last year, had been chosen from a record 137 entries. Candidates were judged equally on academic and engineering ability, plus potential leadership qualities and enthusiasm for civil engineering.
