New 2011 Apprentices announced
Incoming ICE president Peter Hansford has chosen six young engineers who will work closely with him throughout his presidential year.
The apprentices, chosen from across the UK, will gain valuable opportunities to be involved in the work of the president, including accompanying him on regional visits, to influential events and seeing first hand the Institution working to influence government and decision-makers.
Hansford said the apprentice scheme would be an important feature of his presidential year. “Engaging our young engineers is vital to the profession and I am keen to play my part by working closely with the six successful apprentices,” he said.
“These are all upcoming engineers with a lot of energy and ideas, and it will be great to have their input on the many challenges facing the industry.”
He added that the apprentices had been selected from a field of very strong candidates.
This year apprentices were chosen from two routes – both the NCE Graduate of the Year award finalists and the normal applications to ICE.
NCE Graduate of the Year applicants were asked to offer advice to new graduates looking for work, as well as to companies, government and industry struggling to reconcile the need to downsize with a need to continue to invest in graduates. ICE applicants were asked to explain how they thought their role as a civil engineer was likely to change to meet the challenges of achieving a low carbon society.
The 2011 President’s Apprentices are: Chris Lloyd (Halcrow), Urszula Kanturska (Arup), James Bulleid (Costain), Constance Chakanyuka (Environment Agnecy), Owen Jones (Laing O’Rourke). James O’Donnell (Arup).
