Minneapolis DOT reveals plans for I-35

The Minneapolis Department of Transportation (DOT) has revealed its proposal for a replacement to the I-35W bridge, which collapsed suddenly last month (NCE 9/16 August).

Four consortia have expressed interest:

-Ames/Lunda construction with HDR Engineering designing;

-C.S. McCrossan construction with Edward Kraemer & sons designing;

-Flatiron/Johnson Bros with Figg Bridge designing;

-Walsh Construction/ American Bridge with PB Americas designing.

The proposed structure would have five lanes and a hard shoulder in each direction, crossing the Mississippi at roughly the same location, taking interstate 35 between Minneapolis and St Paul.

Speaking about the Karachi collapse this week, Standing Committee on Structural Safety secretary John Carpenter said: “It reinforces the fact that this is a worldwide phenomenon.

"People think that it can’t happen here, but with regards to our ageing infrastructure, we need to remain on our toes.” (See letters).
