Shard steelwork reaches for the sky

The Shard, Europe’s tallest mixed-use building, has now reached the point where its steel skeleton is appearing over the top of London Bridge station.

Piling is complete, after work began in March and steel erection is now in full swing. Part of the steel frame that will form the backbone to the 310m high tower is already at floor five, an indication of the speed with which the 80-storey landmark development is being constructed.

The first concrete pour for the floor is scheduled for March 2010 and contractor Mace is planning to complete a floor and a half each week thereafter. The building’s envelope is due for completion in May 2012.

The Shard is being developed by Sellar Property Group in conjunction with the State of Qatar, with structural engineering by WSP Cantor Seinuk.
