Transport Minister praises Crossrail progress

“It’s good news to see that this project is well and truly underway,” he said.

“Work is on schedule, with the station foundations being laid through a specialist ‘Giken’ piling method designed to minimise noise pollution to surrounding buildings.”

It is the first time this method – which is popular in Japan – has been used in the UK.

Citing Crossrail’s benefits to the city, the Minister said: “This project will boost the UK economy by at least £20bn and create and support thousands of jobs, relieve congestion and provide a high speed rail link across London.”

On the same day, the Minister visited the Crossrail Visitor Centre, which opened earlier this month near Tottenham Court Road and is open two afternoons per week.

Canary Wharf Station will be constructed below the water within the West India Docks complex, and will feature step-free access from street level to platform, benefitting wheelchair users.

The Visitor Centre will engage with residents and businesses to give information about the Tottenham Court Road development and the whole Crossrail project.

More Visitor Centres will open along the Crossrail route as the project progresses.

Work started at Canary Wharf – the first Crossrail station under construction – on May 15.

The Giken piling will be completed by October. The next stage of construction will then see water pumped out of the piled structure to enable a concrete wall to be built.
