Arup/Atkins and Motts win further major Crossrail design contracts

Crossrail has announced three further work package winners, in addition to Capita’s Royal Oak portal win revealed by NCE last week, with an Arup/Atkins joint venture picking up contracts for Tottenham Court Road station, and bored tunnels , while Mott MacDonald won the contract to design sprayed concrete linings.

Crossrail announced a dozen firms that would hold Design Framework Agreements in December 2008, with firms able to compete for work in seven design categories.

The contracts awarded this week are:

• Package C150 – Royal Oak Portal - Capita Symonds Ltd
• Package C121 – Sprayed Concrete Lining - Mott MacDonald
• Package C122 – Bored Tunnels - an Atkins/Ove Arup & Partners International Ltd joint venture
• Package C134 – Tottenham Court Road Station - Atkins/Ove Arup & Partners International Ltd

Programme Director at Crossrail Dr Graham Plant said: “These first design packages give the Crossrail project further impetus following the commencement of construction at Canary Wharf earlier this month.

“The awards mark the start of project’s detailed design stage and we look forward to working closely with all the successful companies in driving forward the design as we move towards the start of main construction works in 2010,” he said.

The Arup/Atkins joint venture will be to design 46 km of 6m diameter tunnel in two parallel bores along a 23km route running from Paddington through to the East of London, and reunites the team that had originally been working on one of the tunnelled work packages prior to the introduction of ‘Optimised Contractor Involvement’.

Arup Project Director Duncan Wilkinson said: “This has been a momentous week for Crossrail, Arup and all involved in the project so far. The appointment of the Arup/Atkins team builds on a number of major rail projects across the world where we have successfully collaborated with Atkins.

“Meanwhile, groundbreaking at the new Canary Wharf Station, of which Arup is lead designer, demonstrates that the project is now truly gathering momentum. We look forward to contributing our knowledge and skills in making the Crossrail vision a reality. ”

Managing Director of Atkins rail business, David Tonkin, said: “Crossrail is set to become one of the world’s most prestigious new rail links that demands engineers of the highest calibre and experience. Atkins brings a wealth of expertise from other successful international metro-style projects such as the Dubai Metro, South Africa’s Gautrain, Copenhagen metro, and numerous projects for Hong Kong’s MTRC and KCRC.“

Capita’s £3M contract to design the Royal Oak portal will be significant because one of the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will be launched from this location.

The 12 companies holding design frameworks are:

  • Aedas Group Ltd,
  • Atkins Ltd,
  • BDP Ltd,
  • Capita Symonds Ltd,
  • Halcrow Group Ltd,
  • Hyder Consulting (UK) Ltd,
