    M Seshagiri Rao's comment 1-Feb-2010 11:04 am

In India, we have had Girder bridges with open decks where walking over the sleepers with a gap of 600mm or so inbetween was a great hazard but gangways have now become standard many night patrolmen's lives have been saved. However, in Africa and in Bangladesh, I find open decks are still common routine. Any Bridgework is hazardous but the Administrations can do a lot to mitigate the hazards even though total elimination will never perhaps be possible.

  • Comment on: Channel Tunnel chaos as Eurostar services suspended by cold weather

    M Seshagiri Rao's comment 21-Dec-2009 1:42 pm

Never heard anything like it. Cold air must have frozen something which suddenly thawed. What was it? There are no radiators out there I suppose. We all have a right to know more. In any case, British and Technology doesn't seem to know what it was. Or, they aren't telling. Why not ask the Japanese?

This is fantastic. I never knew that it was feasible on this scale.

  • Comment on: Forth Crossing parliamentary bill introduced

    M Seshagiri Rao's comment 19-Nov-2009 11:02 am

It is sad that the Forth suspension Road bridge built in 1968 (or about) is nearing the end of its life whereas the hundred years older Railway cantilever bridge seems to be going stronger. With this experience, how much can we trust the cable stayed bridges which are statically even more indeterminate than suspension bridges? They are even more dependent on deflection and prestresses.

  • Comment on: Toll bridge up for sale

    M Seshagiri Rao's comment 19-Nov-2009 10:56 am

If people having paying the dues for centuries, it is no highway robbery. Presumably, the owners have been maintaining the bridge in a good condition fit for the traffic. Instead of asking the Council to buy up the bridge and scrap the tolls, the Community should build another bridge giving the same service alongside and force the owners to go bankrupt
