Iraq engineers seek UK rebuild expertise
"As things stand in Iraq, there are insufficient management systems to run construction projects through their project life cycles," said London-based project manager Mohammed Alderajy.
He is due to speak at the Al Kindi Engineering conference (AEC08) in Baghdad later this month, which aims to bring together engineering talent from inside and outside Iraq to address the country’s recovery and reconstruction needs.
Al-Kindi Society for Iraqi engineers is a professional engineering representative body based in the UK.
"There is a real lack of experience of best practices in this area after 30 years of isolation under Saddam Hussein and the subsequent occupation,” said Alderajy.
"We want to bring new techniques such as the use of construction consolidation centres to Iraq."
Alderajy said he was "surprised and disappointed” at the poor response from British engineering firms to AEC08. American firms are making up most of the firms travelling to Baghdad so far.
