Engineer to rally pink Panda to Mongolia

Watermans structural engineer Ashley List will race to Mongolian capital Ulan Bator for charity.

Britstol-based List is taking part in the Mongol Rally and raising money for the event's official charity Mercy Corps Mongolia which supports rural communities to meet their economic and social needs.

"It was one those things that myself and my mate Peter Edwards got chatting about at Christmas and we signed up to have our names entered into the draw to be one of the participants, so now we're off to Mongolia in two weeks time," said List in tones that suggested he couldn't quite believe he was going himself.

300 teams from all over the world are taking part in this trans-Eurasian dash with the London leg starting from Hyde Park on 19 July.

The rules are straightforward - there is no set route, and "Any car with more than 1000cc of umph is strictly forbidden as over-powered, and considered a risk to your ability to have fun."

There is one exemption from the 1litre rule: "In a further bid to up the silly stakes we will consider full exemption from the vehicle rules for demonstrating significant comedy or unlikeliness value. Good examples would be a cherry picker or an electric milk float." List and Edwards will be driving a lurid pink Fiat Panda called Amanda.

Speaking to NCE prior to departure he said: "Being a graduate civil/structural engineer, I'm looking forward to seeing some interesting infrastructure along the way or lack of it having watched some Google videos of last years teams."
