Insite news: Man-made island plan for airport

Discussions are continuing on a groundbreaking idea to build a £40bn London airport on a man-made island in the Thames estuary.

A decision has still not been made on the idea, which has been debated since 2008.

But the region’s delicate ecology and large bird populations have caused environmental concerns, and the airport would need to be planned around the area’s geology, shipping lanes, fishing activities and leisure services.

London mayor Boris Johnson has been a champion of the idea from the start, leading it to be nicknamed “Boris Island”.

A detailed study into the airport’s feasibility has now been broadened to look at other issues in the Thames Estuary region.
