Insite news: Freedom Tower work progresses
The new tower at the World Trade Centre is shooting up to replace the towers that were destroyed in terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001.
Structural steel for the new tower, named One World Trade Centre and nicknamed Freedom Tower, has now reached 70m above street level − the equivalent of 20 storeys.
The tower is a majorundertaking − the amount of steel used so far is already more than the entire amount of steel in the Eiffel Tower, and the amount of concrete used so far is almost as much as was used to build the entire Empire State Building.
“This progress is one more sign that the site is not a pit anymore,” said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive director Chris Ward.
When completed, the tower will be 541m tall totalling 108 storeys. Construction is expected to finish in the second half of 2013.
