Insite news: Biofuel plant to supply BA’s aircraft fleet

British Airways is to build a major biofuel power plant in east London to produce fuel for its fleet of aeroplanes.

The plant will produce 73M litres of environmentally friendly fuel a year extracted from 500,000t of biomass − unwanted waste and rubbish that is usually sent to landfill.

Four sites in east London have been shortlisted as possible locations for the project. US-based company Solena Group will build the plant, with work starting in 2012 and scheduled to finish two years later.

Solena Group chief executive Robert Do said: “The plant will be a state-of-the-art renewable fuel manufacturing facility. It will not produce any polluting emissions or undesirable byproducts.”
