Mouchel concerned about flood protection funding

Mouchel welcomed the plans to increase protection in England and Wales, announced at the launch of the Anvironment Agency’s new five-year corporate strategy this week, but said government funding must be secured.

“Any measures taken to reduce flood risk and improve protection are to be encouraged,” said Mouchel director of flooding and environmental management Jonathan Wright.

The corporate strategy includes plans to increase flood protection to 200,000 homes and businesses by 2015, in light of warnings that more properties will be at risk of coastal erosion and flooding due to climate change and population growth.

The current round of government funding for flood schemes ends in 2011. It is unclear where future financial support will come from.

Mouchel has previously provided flood management services to the Environment Agency for projects including the UK’s first PFI flood defence scheme at Pevensey Bay.
