Giant sculptures for Blackpool seafront

Giant family-sized seesaws and 30m tall blades of grass are to be built on Blackpool seafront as part of an £2m regeneration project

The project, by urban regneration company ReBlackpool will feature unique public artworks including five towering blades of dune grass which will sway back and forth in the wind and light up at night. A type of flexible stainless steel is being considered for the construction material, as it will be durable against the harsh maritime environment

Two huge 12m long seesaws capable of holding an entire family as well as giant pebble seats, bespoke lighting bollards, bike racks, litter bins and planting.

The area set for redevelopment is also home to the RNLI lifeboat station and all the plans detailed have been formulated in conjunction with the RNLI to ensure the smooth ongoing operation of this vital lifesaving institution.

As well as the installation works, the project will also see the removal of the well-known concrete footbridge which spans the main road outside Coral Island. This will vastly improve views around the Tower and seafront and will be replaced by safe, high-quality pedestrian crossings.

The plans have now been submitted to Blackpool Council and are awaiting consideration. If approved it is hoped work could begin on the site this summer and be complete by the early part of 2010.
