NCE's 2010 graduate of the year wins praise

Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond this week publicly praised NCE Graduate of the Year Stuart Ross.

In a letter to Ross, who works in Arup’s Glasgow office, Salmond said: “Let me reassure you that the Scottish Government is fully aware of the importance of civil engineering and the construction sector to the economic health on this country.”

“It underpins so much else and we will continue to value the contribution of civil engineering in building the Scotland of the future.

Salmond praised Ross’ “innovative” undergraduate research into the engineering properties of the human eye at Dundee University and his 20-plus academic and ICE awards.

Last December Ross beat off 120 worldwide contenders to win the annual NCE graduate award and its £1,500 top prize.

“This is well deserved praise for Stuart”, said judges chairman, NCE editor Antony Oliver.
