NCE 2009 Graduate award winner announced
Arup structural engineer James O’Donnell has won this year’s coveted NCE Graduate Awards, beating off 120 competitors from over 50 companies.
Described by the panel of 16 judges as “oozing enthusiasm and passion” 24 year old O’Donnell received his £1000 prize at an awards’ lunch last week.
“There is clearly no shortage of superb talent among our graduate engineers and all our six finalists were excellent” chairman of judges Richard Haryott told a packed audience of industry leaders. “This fresh supply of skilled young engineers will prove vital as our industry rises out of recession.”
Aim of this year’s awards was to recognise and praise the best all round civil engineers who graduated in 2008 and have now completed their first year in industry. O’Donnell has already headed up the structural design of a £26M complex-shaped detention centre near Heathrow and is currently overseeing construction on site.
Joint runners up, Chris Lloyd form Halcrow and Laing O’ Rourke’s Owen Jones each won £500. Highly commended were David Rowlinson from Hyder Consulting, Raghuraj Pandya from Atkins and Halcrow’s Natalie Ward.
