Heathrow third runway decision expected today

The Government is expected to give the go-ahead to a third runway at Heathrow today, despite growing concern by a number of MPs.

The government has said it supported a third runway at Heathrow in principle if it meets pollution targets and if public transport access to the airport is improved. However key cabinet members have reportedly sought greater assurances that a third runway will not undermine progress made on the climate change bill and there are rumours that some MPs may resign over the issue

"If Geoff Hoon comes to the House tomorrow to announce that the Government will give the go ahead to a third runway he will prove that Gordon Brown is deaf to the concerns of his own party and millions of people living under the flight path," said Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers.

"A third runway at Heathrow would be an environmental disaster and will prove that you cannot trust a word Gordon Brown says on climate change and pollution."

It is thought that any approval for the third runway will come with strict environmental controls and set forward proposals to create a high speed rail hub at Heathrow.
