Camp Bastion: logistics the issue not military campaign

I can only regard Andrew Wood's comments (Letters last week) regarding Camp Bastion, in Afghanistan, as being totally narrow-minded.

Having read the article, the emphasis is on the logistics and problems of the civil engineering work being carried out in Afghanistan and not the military campaign, which makes me wonder if Mr Wood read the paper with an open mind.

Over the last year, I have read several articles on the work being carried out in Beijing for the Olympics, without either being involved in athletics or supporting the totalitarian regime in that country. Using Mr Wood's premise, these should not have been published.

I have also worked overseas and can appreciate the problems procuring both plant and materials to carry out work in such extreme conditions, instead of phoning the nearest plant depot, builder's merchants or concrete suppliers.

During my time at university, I was encouraged to gain as broad a knowledge of every aspect of civil engineering as possible, which I consider this article does.
