No prizes just for long service

I would not like to hazard a guess as to how far into Richard Graham's cheek his tongue has reached (Letters last week), for the simple reason that coming from the east side of the Pennines, I must admit I do not know how far Formby is from Knotty Ash.

I was transferred to the class of Fellow in 1979 and have always regarded it as a great honour for which I had to work hard for many years.

I was also honoured by the Institution two years ago by the award of the 50 years membership certificate for which I am indeed grateful.

The ICE is absolutely correct in insisting that Fellowships should be earned and not awarded like a long service and good conduct medal.

In any case there is no such thing as a free lunch.
